Ethnicity Testing: Where Has Your DNA Been?

Have you ever wondered about your ethnic origin? Do you know for sure where all your ancestors were from and which countries' histories were a direct influence on the people who made you who you are?

I've always known I'm Canadian, but not until recently did I wonder: am I part Finnish?

It was just last week when I was broadcasting to the world on MSN that I was "60% Finnished" a personal project when I became truly intrigued about my heritage. What I was trying to tell the world was that I was 60% finished a large-scale car engine endeavor; however one of my friends that HAS to be right about everything pointed out that I wasn't spelling correctly. Was I just a bad speller or could it be that I was sending out an underlying message about my own self? I facetiously pointed out to Ms. Always-right that it was conceivable I was a descendant of Finland, and that perhaps she was wrong for once. But was it really true? I've always loved Finland's flashy flag; I can't seem to get enough of the Finnish rhubarb stew; and on top of it all, I keep christening custom toboggans in the name of Finland. How could I find out if I really am Finnish?

A good friend showed me that there is hope! Ethnicity testing is available to me and anyone else with similar curiosities (not necessarily a Finnish fetish, of course). There are also applications that extend beyond personal curiosity, but for the most part, everything the test tells you is more-than-fascinating.

Ethnicity testing starts with the widely held assumption that all human DNA originates in Africa and the goes on a 150-thousand-year journey. The test is the first of its kind ever developed. It reports proportional European, Western sub-Saharan African (African) and East Asian ancestry. For example, one person may obtain a result of 80% European 20% East Asian, while another may type as 33% African, 22% East Asian and 22% European. The DNA test is accurate to from 4-8% and sensitive enough to detect, for many customers, a single (100%) African or European great-great-grandparent or a single (100%) East Asian great grandparent.

As far as I know, the only Scandinavian blood in me is due to a package of Swedish Fish; however, with ethnicity test, I can make my own claim to the honorable Finland.

How do I get a monogram?
You make it! Many brides find they can roll their own using a readily-available software program such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. If youre a graphic designer or have access to high-end tools, youd probably prefer Adobe Illustrator, but Word or PowerPoint are also fine. If youve played around but dont like the results, call on an arty friend.

To design your monogram in Microsoft Word:
Choose Insert -> Textbox. Type and format the letter the way you like it. Do this three times. Now click on all textboxes and choose Format->Textbox. Choose Color: No Fill (so you can overlap letters) and Line: No Line. Select all letters, right click, and choose Group to lock in the arrangement. You can now copy your image into Microsoft Paint and save in several formats, such as JPEG.

To design your monogram in PowerPoint:
Youll want to use Word Art to create your letters. Click on the blue tilted A on the bottom toolbar for each letter. Format them to your liking. When youre done designing, select all the letters, right-click, and choose Grouping->Group. Now you can click on your image and right-click for Save as Image. PowerPoint lets you save directly in formats like JPEG, PNG and TIFF.

Some more design tips: The brides initial goes first in a monogram. When the bride takes the grooms last name, the order is: brides first initial, shared last initial (usually larger), grooms first initial.

If the bride keeps her own last name, one option is four-initial monogram (brides first, brides last, grooms last, grooms first). Or just join the couples first names with an ampersand (Jenny & Mike).

Some etiquette tips: Its somewhat frowned upon to use your couples monogram before youre actually married. So, your receptions clearly a green light, but you might want to skip using it on your invites. The ceremony itself is sort of a Ms. Manners gray area. Some brides uphold the spirit (if not the letter) of the law by including the monogram in a not-so-public ceremonial spot, such as a garter, or inside the dress.

DIY monogrammed aisle runner
Its not hard to create your own monogrammed aisle runner, and it makes a big splash. If you have a sewing machine, you can buy and hem the fabric for next to nothing. Now you just need some fabric paint in black or your wedding colors, a pencil, an exacto knife and some cardstock. You also need to decide where you want to place the monogram. Some aisle runners feature a monogram at the bottom, where the procession begins; the top, where the couple stands; and in the middle.

Print out your monogram and blow it up to your desired size on a copying machine. (If your aisle fabric is on the sheer side, you can now trace your monogram directly onto the fabric with pencil. Fill in with fabric paint, and youre done.) Otherwise, tape the enlarged monogram onto the cardstock and cut out the shape with an exacto knife. Trace inside your new template lightly with pencil. Fill in with fabric paint. Follow the same procedure to make your own monogrammed table runners or even chair covers.

The dance floor monogram
A dramatic and memorable way to include your monogram is to project it onto the dance floor during the reception. As fun as this is, though, its not cheap and sometimes not easy. To project a monogram, you need to buy a custom metal plate, called a gobo. Custom gobo manufacturers are easily found online. The gobo itself usually costs over $100, but once made, you then need specific lights equipped with a pattern holder to use the gobo. Its possible that your venue, or your DJ, will be able to provide these lights or help you locate a place from which to rent them.

Now that you have some ideas for incorporating monograms in your wedding, remember the essence of elegance is restraint. Its easy to overdo monograms, so mix them up contrasting touches, such as soft and romantic floral arrangements, to warm up the monograms cool and classic feel.

Grow Ferns Indoors

Ferns are one of the oldest plants known, dating back to prehistoric times. They are a wonderfully adaptable plant and easy to grow indoors. Because of their soft, delicate appearance, ferns add interest and texture to any room. These adaptable plants will thrive indoors with the right amount of humidity The most familiar varieties for indoor landscapes are those native to a tropical setting.

The natural habitat of ferns is the forest floor and shaded conditions. Therefore, filtered, indirect light from a northern exposure is fine during the summer months. During the winter (November-March), an east window is a satisfactory light source, since the sun is low in the horizon and scalding will not normally occur. Ferns will grow in a temperature range of 65 to 80 degrees F. Temperatures 5 to 10 degrees cooler at night are beneficial.

Ferns have a fibrous root system (roots near the surface) which limits their planting to shallow pots, approximately 4 to 6 inches deep except for very large specimens. A soil mix that is well-drained and containing a large amount of humus is satisfactory. Plants should be fertilized on a regular basis. Due to the shallow roots of ferns, it is easy to damage them by over fertilizing. Therefore, use 1/4 to 1/2 the manufacturers recommendations on the house plant fertilizer package.

The soil should be kept evenly moist, not wet. Over-watering causes the fronds to turn yellow and wilt. The roots are unable to function due to lack of oxygen and they may actually rot. Once the roots are damaged from over-watering the plant may not survive. Examine the roots to determine if they are damaged. A healthy root system has light brown to whitish growing tips. A dead or injured root will be dark brown or black.

Under-watering can also cause wilting. If the soil is dried out completely, water immediately. To be sure the soil is thoroughly soaked, submerge the pot in water until bubbles cease rising, then allow it to drain until dripping ceases. Once the fern has recovered, use regular watering practices to keep the soil evenly moist.

Bathrooms and kitchens are good environments for ferns because of all the running water. To help your ferns thrive in other rooms, try one of these options: add a room humidifier; mist your ferns lightly every few days (avoid daily misting); place plants away from vents and fans to prevent drying out; add well-moistened mood moss around the base of the plant to help hold moisture in the dirt.
